Breakers History

Wattle Glen Breakers Basketball Club may be a small Club; however we are proud of our rich and diverse 35 year history.

We may be small now, but we want to grow and provide the opportunity for more boys and girls to play the great game of basketball!

Our history starts with Dave and Liz Lacey who formed the Wattle Glen Boomers in 1985. The Boomers played in the Eastern competition, sporting plain but bright yellow singlets. The Lacey’s wanted a local team for their boys to play for, and the Club quickly grew with new players from Wattle Glen Primary School. By the late 1980’s, the singlet design changed, they became known as the Wattle Glen Breakers and moved the Diamond Valley Association competition.

In 1992, Wattle Glen entered its first girls’ team and it wasn’t before long there were several girls’ teams ripping up the courts around the region. After running the Club for 8 strong years, in 1993 Dave and Liz Lacey needed to stand down so Neil and Joan Pollard took over the still growing Club. Supporting the Pollard’s were Carmel Campbell, Kerry Gentle and Judy Acott.

Neale Woods, with a son in the Under 10 team, took over the Club in 1997. With a long background in basketball, Neale was an active President serving the Club for an impressive 9 years until Ian Taylor stood up in 2006.

With his two boys paying for the Club, Rod Harris took over the reigns from Ian in 2007, and then his wife Cheryl Harris became President in 2009. For 7 years, Cheryl was President and Debbie Trezise as Vice President and Secretary, until both of their sons, Griff Harris and Martyn Trezise played an impressive 20 seasons each with the Wattle Glen Breakers. Gratitude to the following people who supported them over the years: Vicki and Paul Hunter, Kerri Kemp, Victoria Dollimore, Glen Irwin, Denise Johnson and Jenny Clarke.

After 7 years of being General Committee members and sons playing in the Club, in 2016, Victoria Dollimore stood up as President and Glen Irwin as Vice-President. Victoria’s history with the Club is worth noting – not only do her 3 boys (2 still too young to play yet) play for the Club; it was the Wattle Glen Basketball Club where she started playing basketball in 1992! The current Committee consists of Jenny Clarke as Secretary, Denise Johnson as Treasurer, Darren Farquhar as a Team Coordinator with Glen Irwin, and Mel Watson as Uniform Coordinator.

With the growth of our club the committee has new members in 2020. Victoria Dollimore, Glen Irwin & Mel Watson are joined by Justine Moore, Leonie Cooper & Aidan Watson
